FBE Desalination & Water

Fighting Seawater Corrosion Outside and Inside

J-VALVES manufactures FBE coated ball valves for seawater desalination (SWRO / MSF), water treatment plants, water transmission pipelines and power plant cooling systems - floating, trunnion and fully welded types from DN50 to DN1400 (2"-56"), Class 150 to 2500, with fusion bonded epoxy coating from 250 to 500 microns.

Seawater is one of the most corrosive services a valve can face. Our FBE ball valves combine an electrostatically applied, heat-cured epoxy layer over carbon steel bodies with corrosion-resistant trims - super duplex, duplex, stainless steel or nickel-aluminum bronze - so the valve fights corrosion from outside and inside at the same time.

Because coating quality decides service life in water projects, we treat coating as an engineered process with measurable acceptance criteria: surface preparation, anchor profile, dry film thickness, holiday (spark) testing and adhesion testing are recorded for every coated batch and included in the documentation package.

Applications

FBE Ball Valve Applications in Water Projects

Chloride 19,000-45,000 mg/L · continuous duty

SWRO Desalination Plants

FBE coated ball valves for seawater intake, screening, pretreatment filtration and outfall lines. Carbon steel bodies carry a 300-500 micron fusion bonded epoxy layer, while wetted parts use duplex or super duplex trims to resist crevice and pitting corrosion in high-chloride seawater.
Full-port design to limit flow velocity and erosion
Duplex 2205 / super duplex 2507 internals
FBE 400-500 µm with holiday test
Valve position marking and lockable handles for plant safety

60-160 bar · high salinity

High-Pressure RO Membrane Lines

For membrane feed and high-pressure loops, trunnion ball valves with reinforced coatings and duplex or nickel-alloy internals handle continuous duty at high salinity and pressure. Seat designs are selected for tight shutoff after repeated pressure cycling, and torque is measured so actuator sizing is based on data.
Trunnion mounted, Class 300-900
Super duplex 2507 or 254 SMO internals
Reinforced PTFE or metal seat
Torque measured at operating differential pressure

Buried · soil stress · cathodic protection

Water Transmission & Buried Pipelines

Fully welded and trunnion FBE ball valves for buried transmission mains. The coating resists soil stress and cathodic disbondment, while fully welded bodies remove bolted joints from the pressure boundary so there are no flanges to leak or corrode along the line.
Fully welded body, 2"-56"
FBE per ISO 21809-2 / CSA Z245.20
Cathodic disbondment tested for buried service
Weld-end preparation matched to line pipe

Potable & process water

Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants

Floating ball valves in FBE-coated and stainless executions for dosing, filtration, backwash and sludge lines. Seats and coatings are selected for potable water compatibility where the project requires drinking-water approvals, and EPDM seats are standard for treated water service.
DN15-DN300 floating valves
PTFE seats, potable-water grades on request
FBE or stainless body options

Seawater · large bore · 24/7 duty

Power Plant Cooling & Circulating Water

FBE coated large-bore ball valves for cooling water intake and circulating systems at coastal power plants. Direct seawater exposure is handled by the coating system on the outside and corrosion-resistant internals on the wetted side, with DFT and holiday test records supplied for the plant's coating register.

Large bore up to DN1400 (56")

Engineering

Why Fusion Bonded Epoxy Decides Valve Life in Water Service

01

Coating Process and Thickness

Blast-cleaned surfaces receive electrostatically applied epoxy powder, cured at controlled temperature into a seamless 250-500 micron layer - full coverage including body cavities, bolting areas and weld ends, with no brush marks or weak edges.

02

Coating Systems Matched to Exposure

Single-layer FBE for buried lines, FBE plus topcoat for splash zone and UV exposure, and heavier multi-layer systems for aggressive intake structures - selected against the actual exposure, not a default specification.

03

Outside Coating, Inside Materials

Coating protects the outside; trim selection protects the inside. Super duplex, duplex, 316L and nickel-aluminum bronze internals with EPDM or PTFE seats give balanced corrosion resistance across intake, brine and product water lines.

Technical Detail

FBE Coating Specification We Work To

Coating is the part of a water valve that usually fails first - so it is specified, measured and documented rather than described in general terms.
ItemWhat we do
Surface preparationBlast cleaning to Sa 2 1/2 (ISO 8501-1) / SSPC-SP10, salt contamination checked on immersion service
Anchor profile40-100 µm profile, measured per batch to secure mechanical adhesion of the epoxy layer

Adhesion testPull-off adhesion test on batch coupons; acceptance criteria agreed per project specification
Cathodic disbondmentTested for immersion and buried service per ISO 15711 / CSA Z245.20 where specified
Repair & touch-upApproved two-component repair material at weld ends, bolting areas and mechanical damage, with repair records attached
Coating standards referenced: ISO 21809-2 (pipeline coatings), AWWA C213 (fusion bonded epoxy for waterworks), CSA Z245.20 / Z245.21, ISO 15711 (cathodic disbondment in seawater), ISO 8501-1 and SSPC-SP10 / NACE No. 2 for surface preparation.

FAQ

FBE Desalination & Water Ball Valve FAQ

What is an FBE coated ball valve?

An FBE coated ball valve is coated with fusion bonded epoxy - an electrostatically applied powder that is heat cured into a dense, adherent layer typically 250-500 microns thick. The coating protects carbon steel valve bodies against seawater, brine and soil corrosion, which is why FBE ball valves are standard on desalination plants, water transmission lines and buried pipelines.
