Stainless steel trunnion ball valve

In industrial fluid control systems, ball valves play a crucial role in regulating and controlling the flow of various media.Among the numerous types of ball valves,V-TYPE CONTROL BALL VALVES AND O-TYPE SHUT-OFF BALL VALVES are two widely used variants. Each type is designed to meet specific requirements in terms of flow control, medium compatibility, and operational characteristics. This article aims to provide a comprehensive comparison of the flow control performance of V-TYPE CONTROL BALL VALVES AND O-TYPE SHUT-OFF BALL VALVES through empirical testing data, highlighting their respective strengths and ideal applications to assist users in making informed decisions.

I.Basic Structure and Working Principles

(1)V-Type Control Ball Valve

The core component of a V-type control ball valve is a quarter-sphere valve core with a V-shaped notch on its surface. The working principle involves rotating the valve core to alter the relative position of the V-notch and the flow channel, thereby modulating the flow rate of the medium. The V-notch and seat form a shearing action that can effectively cut through fibrous or particulate media, preventing clogging.

(2)O-Type Shut-Off Ball Valve

An O-type shut-off ball valve features a complete spherical core with an internal flow channel that matches the diameter of the pipeline. Its operation is based on rotating the spherical body to align or misalign the through-hole with the pipeline, achieving full opening or closing of the medium flow.O-type ball valves are renowned for their excellent sealing performance and are typically used in applications requiring rapid shut-off.

II.Comparison of Flow Control Performance

(1)Flow Characteristics

Flow characteristics describe how the flow rate changes with different valve openings.V-type control ball valves exhibit a nearly equal percentage flow characteristic, meaning the flow change is nonlinear with respect to the valve opening. This makes them suitable for applications requiring precise flow rate adjustment. In contrast,O-type shut-off ball valves have a quick-opening flow characteristic, with the flow rate increasing rapidly at low openings, making them ideal for on-off control.

(2)Adjustable Range

V-type control ball valves offer a wide adjustable range, often exceeding 100:1,allowing for precise control from minimal to substantial flow rates.O-type shut-off ball valves, primarily designed for full open or full close operations, have a limited adjustable range and weaker regulating capabilities.

(3)Medium Compatibility

The V-notch design of V-type control ball valves enables them to handle fibrous or particulate media effectively, making them suitable for complex media such as slurries or media containing fibers.O-type shut-off ball valves are better suited for clean media or media with minimal suspended particles.Their full-bore design results in minimal flow resistance when fully open but can be prone to clogging in media with significant impurities.

III.Empirical Data Comparison

To provide a more intuitive comparison of the flow control performance between the two types of ball valves,we conducted the following empirical tests. The test conditions were as follows:the medium was water, the pipe diameter was DN50,and the valve openings were set at 10%,30%,50%,70%,and 90%.

As shown in the table above, the flow rate of V-TYPE CONTROL BALL VALVES changes smoothly across different openings, with the flow coefficient increasing gradually as the opening increases. This characteristic makes them well-suited for applications requiring precise flow rate control. In contrast,O-TYPE SHUT-OFF BALL VALVES exhibit a rapid increase in flow rate at low openings, characteristic of quick-opening valves, making them ideal for on-off control.

IV.Application Scenarios

(1)V-Type Control Ball Valve

V-type control ball valves are suitable for the following scenarios:

• Pulp and Paper Industry:Used in pulp conveying pipelines to effectively cut through fibrous materials and prevent clogging.

• Chemical Industry:Ideal for conveying media containing particles or fibers, such as slurries and suspensions.

• Thermal Power Plants:Used for regulating cooling water flow, where precise control is required.

(2)O-Type Shut-Off Ball Valve

O-type shut-off ball valves are suitable for the following scenarios:

• Natural Gas Pipelines:Used for rapid shut-off of natural gas to ensure safety.

• Clean Medium Conveyance:Such as pure water or steam, where rapid on-off operations are required.

• Food Processing Industry:Used for conveying clean media, where high sealing performance and low flow resistance are essential.

V.Conclusion

V-TYPE CONTROL BALL VALVES AND O-TYPE SHUT-OFF BALL VALVES each have their own advantages in terms of flow control performance.V-type control ball valves offer a wide adjustable range and excellent regulating capabilities, making them suitable for complex media applications requiring precise flow rate control.O-type shut-off BALL VALVES,on the other hand, are characterized by rapid on-off operations and excellent sealing performance, making them ideal for clean media applications. When selecting a valve, users should consider the specific requirements of their application, including flow characteristics, medium properties, and control needs,to choose the most suitable valve type for optimal fluid control.
