A Trunnion Ball Valve is a type of valve that uses a ball with a fixed shaft (or trunnion) to control the flow of fluids in a pipeline. What is a Trunnion Ball Valve?

A Trunnion Ball Valve is a ball valve where the ball is supported by a trunnion at the top and bottom, rather than floating freely. Unlike traditional floating ball valves, where the ball is held in place solely by the pressure of the fluid, trunnion ball valves are designed with additional mechanical support. Key Components of a Trunnion Ball Valve

  1. Ball: The ball is the primary flow control element. It is hollow and features a bore in the center to allow fluid to pass through. The ball is designed to rotate 90 degrees to either block or allow flow.

How Does a Trunnion Ball Valve Work?

The working mechanism of a Trunnion Ball Valve is based on the rotation of the ball within the valve body. When the valve is in the open position, the ball allows the fluid to pass through the bore. The ball’s position is adjusted by rotating it using the actuator, which controls the flow of fluid.

Opening and Closing:

  • Open Position: When the valve is in the open position, the bore in the ball aligns with the flow path. This allows the fluid to flow freely through the valve without obstruction.

  • Closed Position: When the valve is closed, the ball rotates 90 degrees to a position where the bore is perpendicular to the flow path, effectively blocking the flow.

Trunnion Support:

The trunnion design offers several advantages. Since the ball is fixed at two points (top and bottom), it does not rely on the pressure of the fluid to hold it in place. This makes the valve more stable, especially in large pipe sizes and high-pressure systems. Additionally, the trunnion helps reduce valve wear, as the ball is less likely to move under pressure, maintaining a consistent seal.
