Ball valves are essential components in the petrochemical industry, used to control fluid flow in various pipeline systems. Two prominent standards, API 6D and ASME B16.34, provide guidelines to ensure the quality, performance, and safety of these valves.

API 6D: Key Requirements

1. Scope

API 6D (Specification for Pipeline Valves) is primarily used for pipeline systems in the oil and gas industry, covering sizes from NPS 4 to 60 and pressure classes such as 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500. It is designed for trunnion ball valves with specific features for long-distance pipelines.

2. Structural Design

• Seat Design: API 6D ball valves often use piston-effect seats, which provide sealing through differential pressure. They can be single or double piston effect, offering bidirectional sealing (DBB) or unidirectional sealing (DIB-1/DIB-2).

• Drain and Vent Features: These valves include drain and vent functions to remove contaminants and check seat integrity during operation.

• Enhanced Valve Body Design: API 6D valves have larger internal cavities to prevent damage from sand and debris, ensuring long-term reliability.

ASME B16.34: Key Requirements

1. Scope

ASME B16.34 (Valves-Flanged, Threaded, and Welding End) applies to a wide range of industrial valves, including ball valves, gate valves, and globe valves, with various connection types such as flanged, threaded, and welded.

2. Pressure-Temperature Ratings

ASME B16.34 provides detailed pressure-temperature ratings, defining the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) for valves at different operating temperatures. This is crucial for selecting the appropriate valve for specific applications.

3. Material Requirements

The standard specifies material selection and performance criteria for various materials like carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel. Material choice must be optimized based on the valve's operating environment and conditions.
